Excitement Unleashed: The Algonquin Hill Climbs quickly gained prominence, attracting hundreds of early model cars and thousands of spectators to the previously tranquil summer resort town. By 1909, signage within a 100-mile radius directed eager motorists to Algonquin. In 1910, the event earned the distinction of being designated a national event by the American Automobile Association (AAA), solidifying its status as a premier American auto challenge.

Hills and Heroes: The hill climbs featured three prominent hills that tested the mettle of the drivers. From Cheese to Condensed Milk: On the site just south of the railroad depot and west of Main Street, a cheese factory was established in the 1870s. Local dairy farmers supplied the milk, and the factory produced quality cheese, driving the local economy forward. However, tragedy struck in 1890 when a devastating fire, sparked by lightning, reduced the cheese factory to ashes.

Rise of the Borden Milk Company: Following the destruction of the cheese factory, the Borden Milk Company recognized the potential in Algonquin and purchased the property. In its place, a state-of-the-art factory dedicated to producing condensed milk was erected. The new facility became a significant employer, with 75 employees, including 50 men and 25 women. It processed milk from 1,500 local cows, further solidifying the town's reputation as a hub of dairy production.

A Beacon of Resilience: TThe Borden Milk Factory played a vital role during a devastating fire that swept through the west side of Main Street on August 16, 1895. As the flames raged, the factory's water reservoir and lone fire hydrant became the critical water source for fighting the inferno. Their efforts helped save numerous buildings, demonstrating the factory's importance in safeguarding the community.

An Enduring Legacy: Over the years, the Borden Milk Factory remained a central pillar of employment and economic vitality in Algonquin. However, as the dairy industry gradually shifted northward to Wisconsin, the factory eventually closed its doors. In the 1930s, the building was demolished, marking the end of an era.
